Caversham Beat the Street Success
Written by: drobs
For the residents of Caversham to collectively walk the distance equivalent to 25,000 miles: Around the World! If you reach that target by September 15th, we will donate £3000 worth of books for local schools and the library! Beat the Street, Caversham is designed to encourage and inspire communities to walk to school, to work, to the shops and into town rather than take their car. It will run from 15th June to 15th September 2013 and anyone living or working in Caversham will be eligible to take part.
All school children in Caversham will be provided with a keyfob, personalised to them and their school. Anyone else can pick up cards from the library.
Beat the Street, Caversham is a real-life game where people can score points and win prizes by walking and tapping their personal Beat the Street card onto walking sensors, known as ‘Beat Boxes’. Walks are then recorded and added up online to see if Caversham residents can walk the same distance as walking around the world! Caversham residents have from 15th June to 15th September 2013 to see if they can reach their target. If the community as a whole reaches the 25,000 mile target, £3000 worth of books will be donated to local schools and the library. In addition, each week of the challenge, there will be random prizes, allocated to anyone tapping their card on the Beat Boxes. The more you tap your card, the greater your chance of winning a prize.
Alongside the main challenge, Primary Schools in Caversham will be competing against each other to see which school can score the most points and walk the furthest. There will be a further prize of £500 worth of books for the winning school and top pupils will also be rewarded by their teachers. Teachers and other school staffs’ points will contribute towards their school’s total.
This initiative is funded by a grant from Reading Borough Council as part of their Local Sustainable Travel Challenge Fund. Its aim is to encourage and inspire communities to walk to school, to work, to the shops and into town rather than take their car. This project, run by Intelligent Health, is based on Intelligent Health’s Global Walk to School Challenge model. If successful, it will be rolled out to other areas.
How can I take part?
You will either be given a RFID keyfob by your teacher if you are at primary school, or a RFID card if you are at secondary school.
If you are a resident of Caversham or work in Caversham, you can collect a card from the following locations:
• GP Surgeries : Priory Avenue, Emmer Green or Balmore Park
• The Library
• From one of our street team who will be at fetes and outside school gates in the week running up to the competition
• From various business outlets in Caversham displaying the Beat the Street Poster
Register your card online at caversham.beatthestreet.me. If you are at primary school and have been given a keyfob, you do not need to register your keyfob online. Go out for a walk, look out for our Beat Boxes and tap your card! Green lights will flash and it will make a beeping noise.
Where are the Beat Boxes?
Look out for the Beat Boxes positioned around your area. Maps showing the locations of the Beat Boxes can be found following this link or displayed at the library, at the GP surgeries or at your school. They are positioned along main walking routes, often at bus stops (try walking into town and getting the bus back!) and at key destinations : the High Street, schools and parks. All the Beat Boxes are roughly 0.2 of a mile from each other. All distances are averaged.
How do I get points?
Tap your card on the first Beat Box you find. You now need to find another different Beat Box to get points. If you find another Beat Box within an hour, you will get 10 points. You will get another 10 points for each subsequent Beat Box you tap on….as long as it is within an hour of the last tap! If you stop for more than an hour, then the next Beat Box you tap will act as a ‘start’ point and the process will begin again. The more you use your card, the greater your chance of winning a prize and the more you will be contributing to Caversham’s overall target of 25,000 miles ‘around the world’!
How do I know how many points I have?
Register your card number on our website caversham.beatthestreet.me and check your points total. It will also tell you if you have won a prize.
How do I know if I have won a prize?
Check your card number on caversham.beatthestreet.me or look in the local press where winning numbers will be published weekly. Winning numbers will also be displayed at the library. If you have won a prize then contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call 08453104481 and we will organise getting the prize to you either in person or by post.
